You Will Never See

August 9, 2015January 31, 2017 Mandi Musick

The world is overcome with masks, shadows and secrets People facing down their demons every day On the outside for you to see, is what is expected for society A mystery that you will never see ♥♥ He sees the struggle that I'm in, that never seems to end Hidden from the world, I'm lost… Continue reading You Will Never See

Behind Closed Doors

August 1, 2015January 31, 2017 Mandi Musick

Behind closed doors, our hearts lay bare Some secrets we hold, some secrets we share We promised forever, but they didn't know We came untethered and no body knows ************************* We held hands, joined together under the lights Dream filled days, and smoldering nights A future forever, a love all our own A house was… Continue reading Behind Closed Doors

Your Long Lost Name

July 31, 2015January 31, 2017 Mandi Musick

The days are long, and the troubles never slow I find myself at the bottom of it all Broken down, a thirst too deep to taste I'm searching for an answer in an old familiar place In the quiet, I can hear your pleading call §§§ Set the bottle on the table, pull the bible off… Continue reading Your Long Lost Name

The Signs, The Times, The Battle Cries

July 26, 2015January 31, 2017 Mandi Musick

The sun comes up and a new day dawns It's a chaotic life where people rise and fall Do you see the pain, did you witness the disturbed? Do you reach out and give them so much more than they deserve? ♦♦ Can you hear the silent screams, do you ignore the time it takes? Do… Continue reading The Signs, The Times, The Battle Cries

The Place Where Our Love Grows

July 12, 2015January 31, 2017 Mandi Musick

Just like this old porch, we are tattered and torn Sagging sides, scuffed up boards and so much more But on a sunny day, she is the coolness of the shade And we don't mind the marks all on the door ↔ It's where our love grows, strong and wide and deep Plans are made and blessings sought and… Continue reading The Place Where Our Love Grows

The days are long, hot and dry but we’ve been busy making hay because that’s what you do while the sun is shining this time of year. Hoses are strung out across the yard to help keep the garden & flower beds watered. The chickens spend most of their day under the shade of the cattle trailer parked by the barn. The livestock are getting relief by wading in the creeks that still thankfully have a little water left in them. I’ve been combing through old farm records that date back to over 100 years ago when Tom’s family was raising crops and animals, farming and homesteading here in little ol Solomon just as we are today. I can’t help but smile thinking of the legacy we are carrying on together 🖤
We’ll be adding water-glassing eggs to our Summer activities this year. 🖤
Crops & garden are all in, PTL and replanting is done in any areas where needed. Got some hay rolled up, working through some post spraying before we move on to side dressing corn and of course more hay. Tonight we start sorting cattle for market.
Farm to Table ~ It’s grilling season and luckily raising our own beef means we have a good supply of steaks on hand. Here’s a good example showing the contrasts when cattle are raised & finished differently. The Ribeye on the left came from a steer, raised on pasture with a diet primarily of hay and wet corn gluten by-product. He ran our pastures at his will and was finished out with just a few days of grain before butchering a couple months ago. The Ribeye on the right came from a heifer, a blind one at that. Because of her blindness she was needed to be more confined, fed mostly grains & hay until she was butchered last year. She was FAT but her marbling and texture resembles Wagyu beef. Either way they are both absolutely scrumptious 🥩
She loved lilacs, reading, gardening, rocking babies, being ornery and laughing. Growing up she just lived the next farm over from ours and we spent so much time together. She’s the reason I love Juicy Fruit gum, ham salad sandwiches, sweet tea and Texas sheet cake. I can always hear her voice singing ‘Oh how I love Jesus’. My heart grieved for her hard years ago when a horrible disease starting stealing her memories. I think today she would have been so happy looking down to see her family together & full of laughter after laying her physical body to rest next to Grandpa. She had saved this note I wrote to her decades ago and I thought it was too cute not to share. 🖤
Heard a familiar noise in the barn earlier this week and found one lonely chick wandering around. After waiting a few days to see if any more appeared I decided to run to the feed store and get this little one a companion yesterday and walked out with 5. Tom’s exact words “Man, that chicken math is crazy” 🖤
